NSU School of Engineering and Physical Sciences with Bangladesh Specialized Hospital
A new artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology for detecting breast cancer has been developed through a joint effort between North South University (NSU) and Bangladesh Specialized Hospital. The system analyzes mammogram images to enable faster and more accurate diagnosis, and it was officially launched on Tuesday, April 7.
To mark the occasion, a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program titled “Cancer Screening in the Modern Era: Integrating Clinical Expertise with Artificial Intelligence (AI)” was held at the hospital.
The event was chaired by Mamun Mostafi, with cancer specialist Kamruzzaman Chowdhury attending as the chief guest. Among the special guests was Sajjad Hossain, Dean of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at NSU. Other participants included Monir Uddin, along with physicians, oncologists, radiologists, AI experts, and researchers.
Speakers emphasized that integrating clinical expertise with AI is becoming essential in modern healthcare. They noted that such initiatives are opening new opportunities in Bangladesh by improving the speed and accuracy of medical diagnoses, particularly in mammogram analysis.

Sajjad Hossain highlighted the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and healthcare providers, stating that these partnerships can significantly enhance diagnostic quality and patient care. He added that the newly developed technology could play a crucial role in the early detection of breast cancer.
Monir Uddin, who leads the Big-Matrix Lab team, explained that there are plans to expand the system into a comprehensive platform. Future developments may include features for early cancer prediction, treatment planning, and monitoring patient progress.
Overall, stakeholders believe this initiative will contribute to building a more advanced, data-driven healthcare system in Bangladesh, paving the way for improved medical services through modern technology.
