Brac University Campus: Area, Location, Size and Architect
Commissioned by Brac Foundation, the new Brac University campus reimagines the role of a university within one of the world’s most densely populated cities! The vision was to create an innovative urban campus that responds to society’s needs while advancing educational excellence, sustainability and community well-being.
Designed as a high-density, mid-rise campus, the project transforms an underutilized urban site into a vibrant academic and civic destination. Rather than functioning as an isolated institution, the campus integrates seamlessly with its surrounding neighborhood, strengthening local connectivity and creating new opportunities for economic and social development.
The architecture employs a durable and contextually responsive material palette of terracotta brick, exposed concrete, local tiles and extensive greenery. These materials reflect local craftsmanship, reduce maintenance requirements, and support regional industries. A modular planning strategy enables future adaptation and academic growth, while the structural design targets a lifespan exceeding 100 years. Simple, robust teaching environments maximize long-term value, allowing student life and activity to define the character of the spaces.

Development began in 2011, construction commenced in 2016, and the campus officially opened in 2024. Throughout the project, cost-effectiveness remained a guiding principle, demonstrating that high-performance sustainable design can be achieved within responsible resource constraints.
A defining achievement of the project is its integration of nature into a dense urban environment. The campus delivers a 130% green plot ratio and incorporates more than 26,000 square meters of landscaped space, illustrating how urban densification can simultaneously increase biodiversity, environmental performance, and public amenity. Biophilic design, natural ventilation, and carefully designed building sections improve occupant comfort while reducing environmental impact.
Brac University campus introduces a new model of vertical learning. Students primarily move through generous staircases and escalators, encouraging active mobility, informal interaction, and social engagement. Multiple circulation routes create visual and physical connections across disciplines, while open spaces distributed throughout the building support collaboration, reflection, and community life. More than 40% of the campus’s open spaces are designed to accommodate a wide range of group sizes and activities, fostering flexibility and inclusion.
Universal design principles ensure accessibility for people of all abilities. The ground floor remains open and permeable, extending the public realm through the Campus Park, which welcomes neighborhood residents and strengthens connections between the university and the city. The Campus Lake Promenade further enriches the public experience by creating an active waterfront with gathering spaces and outdoor cafés.
Since opening, the Brac University campus has become a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization. New retail, food and beverage, and recreational businesses have emerged around the site, while nearby residential accommodation now serves students and university staff, generating local economic activity and reinforcing the area’s educational ecosystem.
Brac University campus demonstrates how architecture can deliver lasting social, environmental, and educational value. By combining sustainability, adaptability, community integration, and human-centred design, it establishes a new benchmark for urban universities and illustrates how educational institutions can become engines of inclusive city-making.
Note: “Commissioned by” indicates that a person or organization formally hired or requested an artist, researcher or company to create a specific piece of work. It clarifies who initiated and financed the project, distinguishing them from the individual who actually executed the task.
