How East West University Develops Student Leadership Through Clubs and Academic Collaboration

In an era defined by rapid change and growing competition, relying solely on classroom-based academic knowledge is no longer sufficient. While academic excellence remains essential, it does not by itself cultivate the leadership qualities that modern employers increasingly seek. Understanding this reality, East West University (EWU) places strong emphasis on developing leadership skills alongside academic growth. Through vibrant club activities and close faculty–student collaboration, EWU creates an environment where students can evolve into confident, capable leaders prepared for the challenges of a technologically advanced world.

East West University empowers students to become future leaders through active club participation, faculty mentorship and academic research collaboration; blending academic excellence with real-world leadership skills.

One of the most effective ways for students to build leadership skills at EWU is through participation in clubs. The university currently hosts twenty-three active clubs, including the Business Club, Debating Club, Science Club, Sports Club, Economics Club and many more. Supervised by faculty advisors, these clubs offer students opportunities to explore their interests beyond textbooks, engage in teamwork, and enhance their communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

G. M. Rabby, the current President of the East West University Business Club (EWUBC), describes how his involvement transformed him personally and professionally.
“I started my journey as a shy probationary member with a strong desire to learn. Step by step, through organizing workshops, competitions, and seminars, I gained confidence and developed leadership and initiative. Over time, I earned the trust of my seniors and took responsibility for guiding new members and representing the club at larger platforms. Today, as President, I apply these skills not only within the club but also in my corporate career. Joining EWUBC has significantly accelerated my growth and helped me move closer to my goals.”

Likewise, Nabila Shahabazee, President of the East West University Debating Club, highlights how club activities strengthened her leadership capabilities.
“Serving the club and leading it as President has helped me acquire a wide range of soft skills, from conflict management to event coordination. I have become more empathetic, a better listener, and more considerate of diverse perspectives. Managing events taught me how to handle logistics, resolve disputes, and lead teams effectively. These experiences have shaped me into a more confident and responsible leader.”

Leadership development at EWU is not confined to extracurricular activities alone. Academic collaboration and research also play a significant role. Sadia Adnin from the Department of Pharmacy shares how faculty support enabled her to take part in a cross-departmental research project.
“Working with faculty from both the Department of Pharmacy and the Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences allowed me to explore advanced nanoparticle research beyond my discipline. The independence my supervisors encouraged gave me confidence and helped me develop leadership in every stage of the project. This experience strengthened my skills as a researcher and motivated me as we prepared our work for publication.”

Similarly, Sourav Sarker from the Department of Civil Engineering explains how academic mentorship contributed to his leadership growth.
“Collaborating with my faculty mentor and EWUCRT—the Center for Research and Training, East West University—transformed my interest in environmental sustainability into practical research. From fieldwork and data analysis to writing manuscripts, I gained comprehensive exposure to the research process. This experience helped me become more accountable, confident, and capable of managing complex responsibilities.”

These experiences reflect how EWU’s engaging campus culture and strong faculty involvement foster confidence, critical thinking, and leadership potential among students. Highlighting this vision, Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of East West University, states:
“Our aim is to deliver a transformative education that integrates academic excellence with leadership development. By empowering students to take ownership of their learning, we ensure they graduate not just as degree holders, but as visionary leaders ready to make meaningful contributions to society.”

Through both club engagement and academic collaboration, East West University remains deeply committed to the holistic development of its students, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and leadership qualities required to succeed in a rapidly evolving global environment.
