East West University Center for Research and Training (EWUCRT) hosted a research seminar titled “Bioactivity-Guided Discovery and Characterization of Novel Antimicrobial Metabolites from Syzygium praecox” on April 9, 2026, at the EWUCRT Seminar Room.

The seminar presented the findings of a collaborative study by researchers from East West University (EWU): Md. Jahid Hossain and Md. Zahirul Islam, Lecturers in the Department of Pharmacy; Dr. Md. Mohiuddin Kabir, Associate Professor in the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology; and Professor Dr. Chowdhury Faiz Hossain from the Department of Pharmacy.

Representing the team, Md. Jahid Hossain delivered the keynote presentation, outlining the methodology and major findings of the study. The research explored the antimicrobial potential of Syzygium praecox and its promise as a source of novel bioactive metabolites at a time when antibiotic resistance remains a pressing global concern.

Professor Dr. Shamsun Nahar Khan of the EWU Department of Pharmacy served as the formal discussant and provided insightful commentary, placing the study within the broader context of pharmaceutical science and antimicrobial research.

The session was chaired by Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor of EWU and Chairperson of EWUCRT. The program began with welcome remarks by Professor Dr. Sohel Rana, Executive Director of EWUCRT, who highlighted the significance of the research and introduced the presenters to the audience.

The seminar was attended by a distinguished gathering that included Professor Dr. M. Ashik Mosaddik, Pro-Vice Chancellor of EWU; faculty members; EWUCRT officials and students.

The event concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, during which participants discussed the study’s implications and the broader impact of such research on public health and pharmaceutical innovation. The seminar reflected EWU’s strong research culture and its commitment to advancing meaningful scientific inquiry.
