Grameen University
Grameen University the 116th private university in Bangladesh will contribute to transforming the country’s education system, Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said.
He made the statement at the fifth meeting of the Board of Trustees of Grameen University, held at the Yunus Centre on Monday, March 9.
During the meeting, members discussed the current status of Grameen University and outlined steps to fully activate the institution in the shortest possible time, especially in student engagement and social service.
According to the board, Grameen University aims to become a unique, community-centered, and innovative university in Bangladesh. The institution is expected to focus on creating new ideas, building leadership, and developing solutions to real social challenges.

Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, “We are waiting for the day when Grameen University will open its doors and contribute to the transformation of the education system in Bangladesh.”
The Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Grameen University on March 17, 2025, subject to 22 conditions. The application for the university was submitted by Grameen Trust, a private organization founded by Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The Board of Trustees is chaired by Md. Ashraful Hasan.
The ministry’s conditions include a seven-year temporary approval period and a requirement for the proposed university to have its own or rented building with at least 25,000 square feet of space. The university must also have at least three faculties and six departments under those faculties.
In addition, Grameen University must deposit at least Tk 1.5 crore in a reserved fund in the name of the university at a scheduled bank. The institution must comply with all 22 conditions set by the Ministry of Education.
Meanwhile, the university started its manpower recruitment process in August last year. In the first phase, Grameen University appointed deans for five faculties and directors for various departments.
With its focus on innovation, social service, and community-centered education, Grameen University is expected to become an important new institution in Bangladesh’s higher education sector.
