Independent University, Bangladesh Convocation
Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) held its 26th Convocation at the International Convention City Bashundhara on January 21, 2026, celebrating the graduation of 2,496 students from undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Of them, 2,140 completed undergraduate degrees, while 356 earned postgraduate qualifications.

Five students received the prestigious Chancellor’s Gold Medal for outstanding academic excellence, and one undergraduate student was honored with the All-Rounder Gold Medal for exceptional performance in both academic and co-curricular activities.
Representing the President of Bangladesh and Chancellor of the University, certificates were conferred by Prof. Dr. C. R. Abrar, Adviser to the Ministry of Education. The convocation address was delivered by renowned photographer, writer, and human rights activist Dr. Shahidul Alam, while Prof. Dr. S. M. A. Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), attended as the Guest of Honor.
In his address, Prof. Dr. Abrar emphasized the role of universities in nurturing democratic values, stating that democracy depends on active, conscious citizens who remain vigilant in protecting justice, dignity, and rights. He noted that a university is not merely an institution for earning credentials, but a place where judgment is formed, authority is questioned, and moral responsibility is cultivated.
Dr. Shahidul Alam urged graduates to use their privileges responsibly and work toward creating a more just and inclusive world. Referring to marginalized communities and those who sacrificed for freedom, he reminded students that their success would have true meaning only if it contributed to the betterment of humanity. “Make your footprints matter,” he told the graduates.
Guest of Honor Prof. Dr. S. M. A. Faiz highlighted the importance of ethical judgment and critical thinking, emphasizing that educated citizens possess a greater responsibility to distinguish between right and wrong in an increasingly complex world.
Vice Chancellor Didar A. Husain acknowledged the collective efforts of faculty and administration in shaping students’ journeys and preparing them to face future challenges. Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. Tamim stressed the urgent need for innovative problem-solvers to address national and global challenges such as climate change, energy security, social injustice, poverty, and economic instability. He emphasized the importance of creativity, scientific rigor, and harmony amid diversity.
Sajid Bin Mohammad, a Marketing graduate and Chancellor’s Gold Medal recipient, was selected as the valedictorian. Other recipients of the Chancellor’s Gold Medal were Tasnuva Mahmood (Accounting), Asadullah Ibn Masood and Zahra Alam Liya (Environmental Science and Management), and Nazmoon Nahar (Pharmacy). Ahmad Tousif Jami from the Department of Global Studies and Governance received the All-Rounder Gold Medal.
Awards for outstanding academic performance at the undergraduate level were presented to Tasfiah Akter Tanjel, Sami Rashid, Raiyan Ahmed, Sidratul Muntaha Ahana, Iqram Hossain Mahboob, and Tahmeed Rezwan Shushmoy. At the graduate level, recipients included Md. Zubair Alam Emon, Farzana Islam, Tasmim Fahima Ahmad, Imran Jahan Digonto, Vincent Dip Gomes, and Tamim Talha Redoy.
Students were also recognized for achievements in co-curricular activities. Sk. Salwa Sharara and Roshni Parvin received awards for Cultural Activities, Shahrukh Bin Hannan for Community Service, and Md. Tipu Sultan and Maha Murshed for Sports Activities.
The day concluded with a vibrant cultural program in the evening featuring performances by Pritom Hasan, Boga Taleb, IUB Music Club, and IUB Dance Club, adding a festive close to the convocation ceremony.
