University of Regina from Bangladesh
In December 2017, from Bangladesh Md Torikul Islam Bhuiyan arrived in Regina, Saskatchewan, facing −30°C temperatures and a language barrier that made even simple interactions difficult. With only a high school education and a dream of starting his own business, he began navigating an unfamiliar world from the ground up.
His turning point came through the University of Regina’s Centre for Continuing Education. Enrolling in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program gave him more than language skills—it provided structure, confidence, and connection. His instructor, Deborah Hulston, encouraged him to stay consistent and “do a little bit every day,” a principle that continues to guide both his personal growth and business operations.

Through the program, Bhuiyan accessed campus resources, explored the city, and built meaningful relationships. Friendships with fellow students offered both emotional support and stability during his early months in Canada.
As his confidence grew, so did his network. Meeting local entrepreneur Rafiqul Islam Razu proved pivotal. With hands-on guidance, Bhuiyan learned how to navigate licensing, hiring, and the operational realities of running a business.
Today, Bhuiyan is the owner of a Second Cup franchise on Rochdale Boulevard in north Regina. He manages a team of seven employees and approaches his café as more than a business—it is a place to build community. He actively gives back by supporting local schools, sponsoring sports teams, and hosting neighborhood events.
“The community gave me so much,” he says. “Every day, when I see people smiling, it feels like I’m giving something back.”
His journey has also been one of personal transformation. From struggling to communicate to confidently leading a business, Bhuiyan reflects on how quickly growth can happen with the right support. “The confidence you gain is incredible,” he says.
His commitment to learning continues. After completing the EAP program in 2018, he earned a certificate in administration and is now pursuing further studies in local government administration, with plans to complete a bachelor’s degree in business.
Bhuiyan’s story is a testament to resilience, community and power of education to open new paths.
