A roundtable discussion on the context of higher education in Bangladesh was held at North South University (NSU) on Monday, March 9. Event was jointly organized by North South University and Bangladesh Society for Private University Academics (BSPUA).

Theme of the discussion was “Higher Education Landscape of Bangladesh: Contemporary Thoughts.” The event brought together leading academics, policymakers and education stakeholders to discuss the future direction of the country’s higher education sector.

Distinguished Guests Attend NSU Higher Education Roundtable

Roundtable discussion was attended by State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj as the chief guest. The special guests included Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh chairman Dr. Md. Sabur Khan, NSU board of trust founder and life member Benazir Ahmed and North South University vice chancellor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury.

Session was presided over by Eastern University vice chancellor and BSPUA President Professor Farid A. Sobhani.

Focus on Policy Support and Academic Excellence

In his speech as chief guest, Bobby Hajjaj emphasized the importance of advancing policy support and academic excellence together to meet the demands of a rapidly changing global economy.

He said that Bangladesh needs evidence-based education policies and inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders, including students, teachers and others; to build a stronger and more inclusive higher education system.

Private Universities Playing a Key Role in Bangladesh

Speaking as a special guest, Dr. Md. Sabur Khan said that private universities have become an important pillar of higher education in Bangladesh. However, he stressed that expanding higher education requires strengthening all levels of education and ensuring broader participation in education policymaking.

Greater Emphasis on Research, Technology and Global Collaboration

Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor of North South University, said that Bangladesh’s higher education sector is undergoing rapid transformation. He noted that to remain competitive globally, universities must place greater emphasis on research, technology integration, and international collaboration.

Call for Government Support for Private Universities

Benazir Ahmed, founder of the NSU Board of Trustees, highlighted the global role of privately run universities and said the government should provide financial assistance, supportive policies, and a favorable regulatory environment for private universities in Bangladesh.

Need for Coordination Among Universities, Policymakers and Industry

In his remarks as session chair, Professor Farid A. Sobhani said that regular exchange of ideas among academics is essential for the future development of higher education. He added that such discussions can help identify practical solutions and stressed the importance of coordination among universities, policymakers, and industry leaders for sustainable progress.

Open Discussion and Iftar Mahfil Held After the Event

Following the formal roundtable, participants took part in an open exchange of views over Iftar in observance of the holy month of Ramadan. Later, an Iftar Mahfil was also organized.

Participants expressed hope that discussions like this would contribute to shaping effective policies and strategies for the sustainable development of the higher education sector in Bangladesh.
